Carter Wiseman is a writer and educator who teaches at the Yale School of Architecture. The former architecture critic for New York Magazine, he was the editor of the Yale Alumni Magazine from 1986 to 2002. His books include I. M. Pei: A Profile in American Architecture; Twentieth-Century American Architecture: The Buildings and Their Makers; and Louis I. Kahn: Beyond Time and Style. At the Yale School of Architecture, Wiseman teaches seminars on Louis Kahn, writing on architecture, and architectural criticism. He also provides editorial support for education and the arts through Writertime Communications, in Weston, Connecticut.

A graduate of Yale College, Wiseman received a master’s degree in architectural history from Columbia University, and was a Loeb Fellow in Advanced Environmental Studies at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. From 1999 to 2010, he was president of the MacDowell Colony, the nation’s oldest retreat for creative artists.

As a long-time journalist, author, and educator, I work with individuals and groups to improve their writing and presentation. I concentrate on the arts and humanities, and have developed writing programs for independent schools and small companies, especially architecture firms. I also work with students–from high school through the graduate level–on projects ranging from research papers to college-application essays and university dissertations.
